Considering that the lives of American presidents are often looked at through a range of perspectives, it’s surprising that there isn’t more published information about the friendships of past chief executives. In this work however, author Gary Ginsberg seeks to rectify this literary absence by delving into the relationships between several presidents and their closest friends. In “First Friends”, Ginsberg focuses on nine presidents spanning from Thomas Jefferson to Bill Clinton and traces the scope of their relationships with a selection of close friends. The book also covers the burdens of leadership, temptations of power, and reliefs that only platonic friends can provide at times. Since presidential personalities have differed greatly, the contributions of presidential friends have varied as well. In some cases, presidential friends have had substantive influence and contributed to the success of an administration, as seen with David Ormsby-Gore’s vital assistance to John F. Kennedy during the Cuban Missile Crisis. At other times though, presidential friends have been harmful, as seen through Bebe Rebozo’s interactions with Richard Nixon that fed into the illegalities of the Watergate Scandal. By looking at presidential friendships in general, Ginsberg truly brings out the more intimate sides of former Oval Office occupants while also educating readers about past personalities that stood behind power. While informative and detailed, the book has small issues in certain parts. For instance, the author criticizes Franklin Pierce for not selecting a new vice president after then-VP William King died in 1853 but ignores the fact that there was no mechanism for filling a vice presidential vacancy until 1967. The author also states that Woodrow Wilson graduated from the University of Virginia School of Law and while it is true that Wilson attended the institution, he withdrew from it and did not receive a degree. Furthermore, Ginsberg refers to Richard Nixon as a senator-elect several times in January 1951 despite Nixon having been sworn into the senate during the first week of December 1950. Although these errors may be minor, it’s somewhat trivial that they’re in the book at all and perhaps the inclusion of footnotes could have helped remedy these occasional factual discrepancies. Despite these flaws though, the book is still educational and analyzes unique aspects of American history.Overall, “First Friends” is an insightful look into the presidency and those who have been in close proximity to it. Additionally, the book serves as a crucial reminder that even U.S. presidents are real people with emotional needs and that the course of history can be affected by the decisions of individuals, even little-known and unelected ones.
